As told by The Cut, Ralph Lauren received a Steiff teddy bear dressed in a miniature polo outfit as a gift from his design team in the late 1980s. Lauren liked the gift so much, he began to manufacture and sell them. The bears were such a hit with customers, the bear began to feature as a graphic on Polo clothing. The Polo bear has appeared in many iterations, from wearing a beret and striped Breton shirt à la Picasso, to teeing off in full golf dress.
